2009 Race InformationDetailed venue and race format information will be posted as they are known. Raceday timeline (check in, start, course closure times) may change slightly as race dates approach. Previous seasons archived here: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 Race #1 -- Wednesday, April 1Issaquah/Sammamish, WA. Check in and start location near I-90 exits 18 or 20.
Dust off your gear, put some fresh batteries in your lights, and come hit the trail for the BEAST season opener! The course will feature biking and trekking/orienteering, with a fun surprise or two to keep you on your toes. This early season warm-up will also be an excellent introduction for novices, with a basic course layout. And for those looking for more of a challenge, we'll have an optional pro course extension for the front-running teams. Race #2 -- Wednesday, May 13Carnation, WA. Check in and start at Tolt MacDonald Park.
This venue is on the rugged fringe of civilization, with the start situated between a big river and a forested escarpment. The extensive network of trails afford miles of biking and running adventure. Race #3 -- Tuesday, June 9Union Bay (Seattle). Check in and start at UW Waterfront Activities Center.
Come make a splash as the BEAST Series takes to the water in race #3! The channels, islands and swampy alcoves of Union Bay are the perfect place to put canoe orienteering into the mix, along with the usual bike and foot sections. As usual, the course will be designed to be friendly to newbies but will have some special twists just for the experts. And the navigation will be easy enough, as long as you're paying attention. The course will be different this year but will use the same prologue/chase format as the last three years' BEAST #3. In other words, the race will be in two stages with a break between them. You can then return the canoe without being in a big hurry, before preparing for the chasing start: Your start time for the second stage will be 7:30 p.m. plus whatever your time is for stage 1, the canoe orienteering. For example, if you take 55 minutes to complete the canoe orienteering course, you will start stage 2 at 7:30 p.m. + 0:55 = 8:25 p.m. You may start the canoe orienteering course as early as 5:45 p.m. or as late as 7:00 p.m., and teams' start times will be separated from one another rather than mass or group starting. For the teams that could use a little more time to get around the course, we'll likely offer a folded chase start, where we start these teams earlier, with some of the faster teams, rather than them waiting for their chase start time. Race #4 -- Wednesday, July 8Shoreline, WA. Check in and start location at NE 185th St and 1st Ave NE.
Join the fun as the BEAST series heats up with race #4! Race #5 -- Wednesday, August 26Newcastle/Renton, WA. Check in and start location TBA.
The season finale! *** Fall Race -- Sunday, November 22 ***Southwest Seattle, WA area
Just when you might be starting to miss the summer race season, this 4-7 hour race will be a welcome reprise. Come revel in the best fall weather the NW can dish up. We've had a good track record providing snowy weather for Fall BEAST, and if November is anything like last winter, our odds are even better. In keeping with other races this season, this course will include some optional Pro Course checkpoints for the front-running teams, while allowing the less experienced or less speedy racers a chance to finish all or most of the regular course. Throw your name in the hat for the Team Lotto, and we'll put you with some new friends/teammates, including an experienced team leader, or sign up your own team. | |||
