Come make a splash as the BEAST Series takes to the water in race #3! Variety is the name of the game in this course, which will include canoe orienteering as well as the usual bike and foot sections. As usual, the course will be designed to be friendly to newbies and keep the old pros on their toes, with enough navigation to keep you busy but not to get you lost (at least not seriously).

The course will be different this year but will use the same prologue/chase format as the last two years' BEAST #3. In other words, the race will be in two stages with a break in between. You can then return the canoe without being in a big hurry, before preparing for the chasing start: Your start time for the second stage will be 7:30 p.m. plus whatever your time is for stage 1, the canoe orienteering. For example, if you take 55 minutes to complete the canoe orienteering course, you will start stage 2 at 7:30 p.m. + 0:55 = 8:25 p.m. You may start the canoe orienteering course as early as 5:45 p.m. or as late as 7:00 p.m., and teams' start times will be separated from one another rather than mass or group starting.

And we'll do our best to place the checkpoints so that they won't become submerged this year.

Race #4 -- Wednesday, August 1

Mercer Island. Start and finish at Luther Burbank Park (I-90 exit 7).
Disciplines: mountain biking (9-13 miles), trekking/orienteering (3-5 miles), water discipline, special surprise task(s).
Check-in 5:30-6:30 p.m. Stage 1 starts 6:15-7:00 p.m. (Sunset 8:44 p.m.) Course closes 10:45 p.m.

This finale will be true to the fast, furious, fun spirit of BEAST, including elements of some other races, perhaps with some new twists.

Like race #3 at Union Bay, this course will be in parts (Stages), with a break in between. The course will start with some prologue races at Luther Burbank Park, followed by an expedition-style (okay, mini- or micro-expedition) chase to the finish. Stage 1 starts will be available from 6:15 to 7:00 PM, and Stage 2 start time will be 7:20 PM plus your Stage 1 time--to give you some transition time and let the excitement build.

The required gear list includes a PFD (personal floatation device, or life jacket) for the water discipline. If you are unable to bring one (don't forget to try borrowing from a friend), then we will endeavor to provide one for you. Using it will be mandatory. Don't worry if water just isn't your thing--you can always skip this element and take a small penalty.
